Pix is changing Brazilian retail. And it will change things even more

Since its launch by Brazil’s Central Bank in November 2020, the instant payment system Pix has become ubiquitous in the country’s daily life, reshaping banking and business. In 2025, new features are set to further transform retail and e-commerce.

The Central Bank will roll out Pix contactless payments in February, following a limited release in November, and Pix recurring payments in June. The contactless feature will integrate with wallet apps for phone-based purchases, while recurring payments will enable automated billing for services like streaming subscriptions.

Payments and Commerce Market Intelligence (PCMI), a consultancy firm, estimates that the new recurring Pix feature could generate up to USD 30 billion within two years, both by taking market share from credit cards and attracting new consumers.

“Recurring Pix has the potential to reshape Brazil’s digital market,” said João Del Valle, CEO and co-founder of the Brazilian payment platform Ebanx, in a report based on PCMI data. “When a payment method gains traction, it creates a ripple effect that boosts the entire ecosystem.”

The report projects Pix's share of digital sales expanding by 35% annually through 2027, outpacing the growth rate of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
