Since we believe in letting you set the pace, here’s your choice:
You can cut straight to the essentials (our signature approach), or take a few minutes to get to know the people and purpose behind our journalism.
But since context is our key word, I’d recommend at least reading the first part below — it’s brief, but it’ll give you a real sense of who we are.
Check out our readers’ favorites — newsletters and reports
From the big picture…
For over seven years, we’ve been trusted by embassies, global institutions and top decision-makers around the world to cut through the noise and explain Brazil and Latin America from the ground up — from the big picture to the tiny details.
We specialize in context: explaining and presenting complex issues in ways that help you make sense of what’s happening — whether it’s in the corridors of power in BrasĂlia, or deep in the Amazon rainforest.
Here’s what sets us apart:

…to the tiny details
Still with me? Great. I’d love to share a bit of the story behind the screen, telling you how The Brazilian Report came about.
The Brazilian Report wasn’t born in a boardroom, instead it grew out of frustration, curiosity and (let’s be honest) a bit of stubbornness. Back in 2014, Gustavo was studying in France after years working as a political correspondent for Veja magazine. He was finishing his master’s in political science at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and felt a growing void — Brazil was misunderstood abroad, and quality information about the country was lacking.
Meanwhile, I was bouncing between France and China as an entrepreneur in emerging markets. I told him: "Either stop complaining, or do something about it." He chose the latter—and Parlons Brésil, a blog in French, was born. He got spotted by French news outlets who thought his insights were special.
That passion project turned into plus55.com, a general news site in English, which eventually led to our boldest move: creating The Brazilian Report in 2017. It started with just the two of us — and one contributor, Euan Marshall, who’s still with us today as deputy editor — and a belief that Brazil and Latin America deserved journalism that’s clear, smart and independent.
Then things took off. We launched our flagship podcast, Explaining Brazil. We got picked up by embassies and multinationals, invited on global news channels, won awards, grew, moved into an office, endured a pandemic, moved to another office … We’ve been invited to moderate top-notch events. But above all, we’ve always stayed loyal to one thing: our readers.

Today’s team
We never chased clicks. We never outsourced our independence to social media. We believed from day one that sustainability would come from readers like you, not algorithms.
Because Brazil deserves more than conglomerate media outlets. It deserves journalism that serves the public, not powerful interests.
So if you’ve made it this far: thank you. For reading. For being curious. For being part of something that we hope will help shape a more informed world.
Whether you stay for the headlines or dive deep into the details, I’d love for you to get a feel for what we publish — and decide if it’s something that makes sense for you.
By supporting us, you’re not just staying informed, you’re helping change the media landscape in Brazil.
Best regards,
