Good morning! Voting ended yesterday for the 97th Academy Awards, and Brazilians remain on tenterhooks to find out if Walter Salles’s “I’m Still Here” will take Best International Feature, and whether the film’s lead, Fernanda Torres, could grab Best Actress. The ceremony will be held on March 2, in the middle of Carnival in Brazil.

Prosecutor general files charges against Bolsonaro and acolytes

In yesterday’s newsletter, we reported that Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet was in the final stages of drafting his report on a federal investigation into a coup plot led by former President Jair Bolsonaro and his allies. Less than 12 hours later, that prediction became reality, as Gonet issued criminal charges against the far-right leader and 33 other people.
Driving the news: Gonet alleges that Bolsonaro led a “criminal organization” aimed at overturning the election results and maintaining power through unconstitutional means after he lost the 2022 election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He essentially fully accepted the findings laid out by the Federal Police in a November 2024 report.
