Bolsonaro begins serving time

The Supreme Court on Tuesday unanimously confirmed the conclusion of the criminal case against former President Jair Bolsonaro for attempting a coup after losing the 2022 election. The court also ordered that he begin serving his prison sentence of 27 years and three months

Bolsonaro will start his sentence in a Federal Police facility, where he has been held since Saturday amid concerns that he might flee the country or seek asylum in a foreign embassy — a perception reinforced by the fact that the former president tampered with his ankle monitor using a soldering iron.
