🧩 Brazil’s climate puzzle: A nation of extremes
From rising sea levels in the Northeast to record-breaking floods in the South, Brazil’s vast geography means climate change hits differently across its regions
Hello! Welcome to another edition of the Brazil Society newsletter! This week, we dive into a new study giving us a rare insight into the diversity of Brazil’s climate challenges, from state to state.

Brazil has continental dimensions, which are reflected in almost all aspects of life up and down the country. Be it traditions, cuisines, accents, industries or favorite styles of music, realities in Brazil can differ greatly from region to region, state to state, and town to town — and this diversity is readily apparent when we talk about environmental governance and the effects of climate change.
From an environmental point of view, the world may see Brazil’s challenges as limited to Amazon deforestation and Pantanal wildfires. Vast and pressing as these problems are, they do not tell the full story of the country’s climate actions.
For instance, the South and Southeast regions of Brazil have suffered relatively little from deforestation or predatory mining in recent years. By the same token, the Center-West region is barely bothered by landslides or perennial flooding.

Released in January by the Brazil Climate Center (CBC) and Climate and Society Institute (ICS), the State Climate Change Annual offered a less-than-common insight into Brazil’s climate challenges at a sub-national level.
