With public attention turned to scandals involving corrupt bankers, presidential candidates and shady movie funding, last week in Brasília saw the powerful agribusiness caucus run its tractors through the country’s environmental oversight rules, fast-tracking and approving a quartet of bills weakening land and biodiversity protections.
Dubbed “Agro Week,” officials from the Environment Ministry called the legislative push an “unimaginable setback,” as members of the House approved four controversial proposals in a single evening.
