Endorsements put Kast within touching distance of the presidency

José Antonio Kast is the runaway favorite to become Chile’s next president, as the hard-right candidate finished just three points shy of left-winger Jeannette Jara in last weekend’s first round vote, and has since secured two key endorsements for next month’s runoff.

The election confirmed Chile’s conservative turn, as the three right-wing candidates who fought for a place in the second round combined for more than half of the votes, the highest first-round right-wing total since the country’s return to democracy in 1989…
