👛 Cost of living and a silent pact
The cheapest (and most expensive) places to live in Latin America. And why the unpopular Dina Boluarte is still in office.

In one of the Bible’s most famous parables, Jesus surprises his followers by redeeming the most unpopular man in town, a Roman tax collector seen as abusive and treacherous by the local Jewish community. Following in his footsteps, Pope Leo XIV chose to meet with the most unpopular leader in Latin America, President Dina Boluarte of Peru, in one of his first public appearances.
The two leaders are Peruvian, but they could not be further apart regarding public support. A recent poll showed that only 1% of the country disagreed with Leo XIV’s nomination as pope, while barely 2% of Peruvians still backed Boluarte as president.
Which begs the question: how has Boluarte managed to stay in office in such a politically unstable nation, despite widespread repudiation across the political spectrum?
