The toppling of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela has added weight to the latest round of US economic sanctions on Cuba, forcing Havana to consider a radical shift in approach towards its superpower foe and northern neighbor.

Cuba has been facing an unprecedented crisis over the last decade, which has escalated from chronic economic strain into financial collapse. The island had been weakened by the decline of the Venezuelan economy, on which it had come to rely since the 2000s, as well as by a Covid crisis that devastated the remainder of its crucial tourism sector.

Now, the US capture of Maduro has put an end to the free oil shipments that kept Cuba’s economy afloat, and Donald Trump’s diplomatic pressure has blocked Mexico as an alternative source of energy. This has forced Cuban authorities to negotiate with Washington for economic relief and to protect their elites from social unrest and potential downfall….
