Batteries provide the crucial link for Brazil’s renewable energy boom

In 2015, Brazil’s then-President Dilma Rousseff became the butt of many jokes online and in the media when she suggested, during a speech at the United Nations, that the world needed to learn how to “store wind.” While Rousseff certainly had a penchant for a verbal gaffe, she was unfairly criticized in this particular incident — as her calls for technology to stockpile wind and solar energy were, in fact, prescient.

Brazil is undergoing a surge in the generation of clean energy, with wind and solar production accounting for 24% of the country’s electricity throughout 2024 — and more than one-third during the month of August 2025. And the trend is bound to continue, with only China having more solar energy projects in the pipeline…
