Ecuador’s Citizen Revolution Movement began Sunday with high hopes that its third consecutive bid to reclaim power in a runoff would finally succeed.

  • Polling markets had tilted slightly in favor of its candidate, Luisa González, buoyed by her unexpectedly strong showing in the first round. 

  • But optimism quickly faded as incumbent President Daniel Noboa secured a decisive victory — widening the margin by which he had previously defeated the left-wing lawyer in their 2023 face-off.
