Exiled after claiming victory in last year’s July 28 presidential election, Venezuela’s opposition leader Edmundo González has promised to return home to be sworn in on January 10, setting up a final showdown this week when the increasingly authoritarian Nicolás Maduro is also due to be inaugurated, despite strong evidence of electoral fraud.

What they are saying. “I only exited Venezuela temporarily, and the time for my return will be the January 10 inauguration,” González said last month. The opposition leader also promised not to run a “government from exile,” distancing himself from the failed 2019 experiment of Juan Guaidó.

  • The government, meanwhile, has offered a USD 100,000 bounty for anyone who helps capture González when he steps foot in Venezuela, accusing him of sedition and conspiracy.
