In recent years, however, the contest has grown increasingly one-sided. Brazil has not beaten its neighbor since 2018, and on Tuesday night, it suffered a 4-1 trouncing in a World Cup qualifier in Buenos Aires.

Egg exports to the US soar

Data from the Industry and Trade Ministry shows that Brazilian egg exports to the United States more than doubled in net weight last month, as the US grapples with a devastating avian flu outbreak that has decimated domestic supplies.

State of play. US wholesale egg prices have skyrocketed 255% in the four months through February, as bird flu has infected or killed 162 million birds since 2022, reducing the nation's egg-laying chicken flock by 15%.

  • On the other hand: Brazil, the world’s second-largest poultry producer (behind the US) and largest exporter, has maintained its status as free from the H1N5 avian influenza in commercial plants.
