Ahead of Honduras's contested election last year, Donald Trump endorsed conservative candidate Nasry Asfura (who went on to win) and pardoned his party ally and former President Juan Orlando Hernández, who had been convicted in the United States on drug-trafficking charges.
Just a few months later, Hernández and Asfura are at the center of a new regional uproar. Leaked audio recordings, not independently verified, appear to show the pair coordinating a US-backed network of partisan media outlets to target left-wing governments in the region, including those of Mexico and Colombia.
