Will Johannes Kaiser be the Chilean Javier Milei?

After Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil and Javier Milei in Argentina, many in Chile believed that José Antonio Kast, who narrowly lost a runoff against President Gabriel Boric in 2021, would be their local equivalent and propel hard-line conservatives to power. But a new figure even further to the right is seemingly stealing Kast’s thunder: Johannes Kaiser.
By the numbers. When asked to spontaneously respond which candidate they would vote for president, Kaiser’s name is the second-most common with 13% of preferences, only behind center-right Providencia Mayor Evelyn Matthei, the latest Cadem polls say. Meanwhile, Kast has fallen from a May 2023 peak of 27% to a meager 8% now.
