Brazil’s Big Two clash for Copa Libertadores glory

By this evening, Brazil will have equalled Argentina as the country with the most titles in the history of the Copa Libertadores, South American football’s answer to the Champions League. It is worth noting that 11 of Brazil’s 24 (soon to be 25) all-time Libertadores wins have come since 2010, and as of later tonight, the last seven editions of the tournament will have been won by Brazilian clubs.
But while Brazil’s recent dominance is overwhelming (only two of the last 14 finalists have been non-Brazilian sides), the current hegemony is even more specific. Palmeiras and Flamengo, one from São Paulo and the other from Rio de Janeiro, have been lording it over their rivals at domestic and continental levels, and they face off tonight in Lima to determine who will be crowned South America’s best…
