When will Lula reshuffle his cabinet? How the government lost the social media battle. And the fall in murders in Brazil

Good morning! Léo Batista, legendary Brazilian TV presenter, died on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro, aged 92. Batista spent 55 years at TV Globo, working on almost all of the network’s newscasts throughout generations. Lamenting his death, President Lula called him an “icon of Brazilian journalism.”

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will hold a cabinet meeting today to demand urgency and tangible results from his ministers as he heads into the second half of his term. The first such meeting of the year also comes amid expectations of an imminent cabinet reshuffle.

  • Lula will deliver an opening address, which is expected to be broadcast live and relayed by cable news channels.

  • Allies expect the speech to highlight the administration’s accomplishments over the past two years, while stressing the need for faster, more coordinated action.
