The deeper Brazil’s Banco Master case goes, the fishier things are beginning to smell. Not only because of what investigators say they are finding, but because of how the Supreme Court has chosen to handle the probe and its body of evidence.

The Federal Police on Wednesday carried out 42 search and seizure warrants across five states (São Paulo, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul and Rio de Janeiro), targeting addresses tied to Banco Master’s CEO, Daniel Vorcaro, and relatives, including his father, his sister and his brother-in-law Fabiano Zettel (the largest 2022 individual donor to the campaigns of former President Jair Bolsonaro and São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas).

The operation also targeted high-profile businessman Nelson Tanure and João Carlos Mansur, founder and former president of the asset manager Reag Investimentos. Reag is currently suspected of links to money-laundering schemes used by criminal organizations — and was this morning liquidated by the Central Bank due to “grave violations” of the rules that govern the national financial system.
