US President-elect Donald Trump has not been inaugurated, yet his sharp political rhetoric is already in action. Doubling down on his classic threats about tariffs, the Republican leader is now making repeated references to annexing foreign sovereign territories, and Latin America has not been immune to his declarations.
Expansionism. What first seemed like a joke about turning Canada into the 51st US state has now become a topic being seriously discussed worldwide. Trump also says he wants to buy or annex Greenland, the Arctic autonomous region belonging to Denmark.
Panama. As he posts fake maps in which all of Canada has merged under the US banner on his Truth Social network, Trump has also turned his attention to Panama, the small Central American country once part of Colombia, declared independent in 1903 under the auspices of Washington.
