⛪ Pope Francis: Latin roots, global reach
Little-known theological debates in Latin America shaped Pope Francis’ life and legacy
QUESTION OF THE WEEK

The answer: four — Alberto Fujimori, Pedro Castillo, Alejandro Toledo and, now, Ollanta Humala. Two-thirds of respondents got it right!
How Latin America shaped Francis’ papacy

Like Christianity two millennia ago, Pope Francis (1936–2025) was born far from Rome, in a distant and politically volatile nation. Yet both found a way to reach even their fiercest critics through a message of missionary work, humility and ecumenism — one that resonated across a distressed world.
👉 Why it matters. Francis was far more than the first pope from Latin America. He was the first pontiff from outside the traditional circle of Mediterranean and European nations — and the first Jesuit to lead the Holy See. His origins at the margins shaped his papacy in profound ways and will continue to influence the Church after his death.
A “Peronist” theology. Raised in a middle-class home during the heyday of Peronism and liberation theology, Francis absorbed a political culture that left a deep imprint on his worldview.
