Brazil’s Senate sent a warning to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The upper house on Wednesday confirmed Paulo Gonet for another two-year term as Brazil’s prosecutor general, but by only 45 to 26 votes — the tightest margin for the position since Brazil returned to democracy in the 1980s. Gonet needed 41 votes to win confirmation. The last time he appeared before the Senate, in 2023, he sailed through with 65 votes.
