Brazil marked Independence Day on Monday with two competing productions.

  • In Brasília, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sat through the military parade flanked by the heads of the Supreme Court, the Senate, and the House, wrapped in the language of national sovereignty.

  • In São Paulo, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro turned a cold, rainy afternoon into a rally against Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

Both wanted to project momentum. Neither had the crowd to prove it.
