Donald Trump’s tariff threats were put into action this week, as the US president placed import duties on his country’s three main economic partners: Mexico, China and Canada, who combine for nearly 45% of US imports.

Quick deals. While markets and analysts panicked about the effects of these tariffs, Mexico and Canada came to an agreement with Trump on the first working day after his announcement, promising to send troops to the border in exchange for a 30-day pause.

Panama, too. In a separate conflict, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also secured concessions from Panama following Trump’s threat to re-take the strategic Panama Canal from the Central American nation if “Chinese influence” over the waterway was not curbed.
