Brazilian iron and steel industry on alert

US President Donald Trump announced that, effective today, the United States will impose a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports, a move that could have far-reaching economic consequences.
👉 Why it matters. Brazil is the second-largest supplier of steel to the US after Canada and accounted for approximately 14% of all steel shipped into the country last year, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute.
The new tariff is expected to deal a significant blow to Brazilian steel producers, as 48% of Brazil’s iron and steel exports in 2024 were destined for the US, according to data from the Brazilian Industry and Trade Ministry.
