US President Donald Trump on Tuesday unveiled sweeping new tariffs on American imports, applying a universal 10% rate across all countries and goods starting April 5. Dozens of trading partners — including China, the EU and India — were hit with additional “reciprocal” duties of up to 49%. Brazil will face the baseline 10% levy.

👉 Why it matters. Brazil was among the few major economies — along with Australia and the UK — that avoided steeper rates. But a 10% tariff still translates into a real pain: a major chunk of Brazil’s USD 40.4 billion in exports to the US could become less competitive overnight.

  • According to one estimate, US importers are set to pay an estimated USD 4 billion more annually for Brazilian goods, based on 2024 trade volumes.
