Brazil reinstates visa requirements for US, Canadian, Australian tourists

Brazilian entry visa requirements for travelers from the United States, Canada and Australia are once again in force, after having been lifted for the last five years.
State of play. Brazil had waived visa requirements for the three countries (plus Japan) in 2019 under then-President Jair Bolsonaro, who argued the move would boost tourism. In 2023, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva reversed the decision through a decree, citing reciprocity as a guiding principle of Brazilian diplomacy and limited tourism gains.
The visa requirements, however, do not affect citizens from Japan; in August 2023, Brazil and Japan signed a reciprocity agreement that lifted tourist visa restrictions for both countries.
