Brazil-US relations took another bump after Washington ordered a Brazilian Federal Police officer to leave American territory. US authorities accused him of trying to manipulate the immigration system to force the return of a fugitive convicted for his role in a failed coup attempt led by former President Jair Bolsonaro.

The officer in question, Federal Police officer Marcelo Ivo de Carvalho, had been stationed in Miami since March 2023 as a liaison to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), tasked with locating Brazilian fugitives abroad. His mission had been extended through August of this year.

On Monday evening, the State Department's Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs announced his expulsion on X, citing an attempt to “game [the US] immigration system.”
