Disparaged in parts of Europe and ridiculed for its poor ticket sales, the new Club World Cup has caused absolute frenzy in Brazil, whose participant clubs are desperate to win it

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has billed it as an “unforgettable celebration” that will “revolutionize club football,” but throughout Europe, the announcement of and all subsequent news pertaining to football’s new-look Club World Cup tournament — kicking off this evening in the US — have been met with sighs, groans and shrugs.
Amid discussing prize money, broadcasting rights, paltry demand for tickets and occasionally the football itself, the thrust of myriad comment pieces about the tournament from Europe’s sports writers has invariably amounted to: “Who cares?”
Well, the answer to that billion-dollar question of “who cares” is simple. The fans, players, coaches and directors of any of the non-European clubs involved in the tournament — especially those from Brazil and Argentina — care about the Club World Cup very much indeed…
