We begin the year with a look forward to some of the biggest events in Brazilian sport in 2026, which you will no doubt be able to read all about here on Brazil Sports. To start things off, the small matter of 22 people chasing a ball in June and July…

There is no bigger event in Brazil, sporting or otherwise, than when the World Cup comes around every four years. The country comes to a standstill to watch the national team’s matches, with the government decreeing a public holiday for every game Brazil plays.
Hosted in the US, Mexico and Canada, the 2026 World Cup will be the only show in town, starting from Brazil’s Group C opener against Morocco on June 13, until as far as the national team manage to progress — perhaps all the way to the final on July 19.
For the first time in history, Brazil will be coached at a World Cup by a foreigner, but after a chaotic qualification process under his predecessors, the arrival of Italy’s Carlo Ancelotti is arguably the only reason why Brazil should be in the conversation as title contenders.
Despite having won the World Cup more than any other country, Brazil has been starved of success since 2002, having only made it past the quarter-finals once in the last 24 years. Will their fortunes turn this time around?
