How Diogo Moreira put Brazil back on the motorcycle racing map

Alongside the King of Football, Pelé, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu creating Gracie family and three-times French Open champ Gustavo “Guga” Kuerten, assembling the Pantheon of Brazilian sport would be impossible without Ayrton Senna, acknowledged by many as the greatest race driver in history and elevated to mythical status after his tragic death on the circuit in 1994.

But Brazil’s pedigree and fame in motor racing are typically limited to Formula 1. The country has historically struggled to break into the elite ranks of motorcycle racing, a sport largely dominated by European drivers. Looking at the sport’s top three categories, MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3, the vast majority of title holders hail from Italy, Spain and the UK.

But 2025 has seen Brazil take a historic step forward in motorcycle racing, thanks to the exploits of young rider Diogo Moreira, who won the country’s first-ever world title in an elite category…
