Rain, drama, titles: the magic of Interlagos and the São Paulo Grand Prix

Brazil, and specifically the Interlagos race circuit to the south of São Paulo, holds such significance for Formula 1 and motorsport as a whole. From its first official inclusion on the F1 World Championship calendar in 1973 until this year, the Brazilian Grand Prix (now São Paulo Grand Prix) has often held pride of place on the yearly schedule, either at the very beginning or decisive end.

This has changed in recent years, with Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi dominating the final spots on the calendar, taking some of the sheen off the São Paulo race.

Indeed, for a race that had become synonymous with crowning champions and deciding seasons, it has been a while since history has been made at Interlagos — although that could change this weekend…
