Dom Phillips’s posthumous book is completed

The perils of reporting in remote areas of Brazil came into stark relief in June 2022, when British journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian indigenous expert Bruno Pereira were brutally murdered near the Javari Valley, a remote indigenous territory in the western Brazilian Amazon, where crime runs amok.

Pereira, on leave from Brazil's indigenous foundation Funai, spent years fighting illegal fishing gangs that exploited the protected Javari Valley region. His tireless advocacy made him a target. Phillips, a seasoned correspondent, was accompanying Pereira on a reporting trip for a book on Amazon conservation when they were both killed.

After his death, a group of Phillips’s friends and colleagues set about completing that book in his memory — a project now ready. “How to Save the Amazon: A Journalist’s Deadly Quest for Answers” will be released internationally in May by Bonnier Books.
