Bolsonaro gets one vote for his acquittal

The double Arabian pike is an iconic floor exercise move that made Brazilian gymnast Daiane dos Santos a world gymnastics champion. It is a forward-initiated double backflip in a piked position with two twists — a move that seems impossible to land and even harder to imagine. On Wednesday, in the words of a former chief justice, Supreme Court Justice Luiz Fux attempted the legal equivalent.

Speaking third in the trial over whether former President Jair Bolsonaro led a coup attempt, Fux stunned his peers with both the scale and substance of his opinion. Stretching over 13 hours (and often repeating itself), his opinion echoed far-right conspiracy theories and fully exonerated Bolsonaro, rejecting any proof of his role in a conspiracy — while voting to convict two of his allies. 

To some observers, Fux not only defied expectations but defied logic…
