Kast tries to lure moderates after presidential runoff victory

Though José Antonio Kast’s victory in Chile’s presidential runoff was predictable, it is no less meaningful, with the country electing the most right-wing leader Chile has seen since the return of democracy in 1990.
Kast took 58% of the ballots and won in every Chilean state, including the capital, Santiago, which usually leans more progressive. Meanwhile, his opponent, Jeannette Jara, only won among Chilean expats. His margin of victory was larger than that of Chile’s last right-of-center president, the late Sebastián Piñera, who won runoffs with 54% in 2017 and 51% in 2009.
