With 2024 coming to an end and The Brazilian Report launching a new website, we thought this would be a good opportunity to look back at our coverage last year, giving our new readers a window into what to expect from the LatAm Report going forward.
January. The year started on a shocking note, with footage of gangs taking control of a TV station in Ecuador and recently sworn-in president Daniel Noboa announcing a war against drug cartels in response.
In a more hopeful story, Guatemala’s progressive leader Bernardo Arévalo managed to take office despite multiple bans and threats from the country’s old regime.
February. Tragedies in Chile marked the end of the summer, as former center-right president Sebastián Piñera fell to his death in a helicopter crash while the country’s forests burned down, causing hundreds of deaths. Not long after, the gruesome murder of an exiled Venezuelan leader in the country, which many traced back to Caracas, also made the headlines.
