The extended deadline for countries to submit their updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement has now come and gone, and the results are less than encouraging.
Despite appeals from Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, only 56 of the Paris Agreement’s 195 signatories submitted new NDCs in time. At the last update deadline, in 2021, with 40 days to go before COP26 in Glasgow, 113 member nations had delivered their NDCs.
