Brazil's electoral calendar contains a bureaucratic checkpoint that doubles as a starting gun. From July 20 to August 5, parties and party federations hold the conventions that formally choose who will run in October — for president, governor, senator, congressman and state legislator — and settle which alliances they will run with.

👉 Why it matters. The step is not decorative. To register with the electoral courts, a candidate must first be chosen at a party convention. Until the gavel falls, everyone is a pre-candidate.
