Members of Congress face back-to-back raids

On two consecutive days, the Federal Police knocked on lawmakers’ doors: on Thursday, targeting a center-left senator, and on Friday, against two far-right House members. These operations come just a week after marshals raided offices used by a powerful congressional aide who is believed to have had control over the so-called “secret budget,” a shady system for distributing budgetary grants that is riddled with corruption allegations.

👉 Why it matters. The operations, which target alleged schemes to embezzle money from social security benefits and from the House’s own budget, are intensifying the collision between law enforcement and politics just as Brazil edges toward another charged election cycle.

This week’s police raids were aimed at two separate, though procedurally similar, affairs.
