The upward trend in support that pollsters detected for Chile’s Communist Party candidate Jeannette Jara before the primary blackout was no mirage. If anything, it was an understatement, as Jara ended up brushing aside her more moderate rivals by taking 60% of the vote to become the left’s next presidential candidate.

The 51-year-old lawyer was dominant in a relatively low-turnout election, where only 1.4 million Chileans (less than 10% of registered voters) went to the polls. Jara will now represent a broad progressive coalition in the November 16 presidential election …
