Nearly three decades after São Paulo held its first LGBT+ Parade, the event has grown into the largest of its kind worldwide and one of the most celebrated attractions in Brazil’s biggest city.
This year, the São Paulo Pride Parade not only marks its own coming of age but also turns the spotlight on aging itself — specifically within the LGBT+ community. The 2025 parade manifesto honors “those who defied time, broke down barriers, and paved the way for pride,” and calls for “dignity, care and visibility” for older queer individuals.
Selected through a public vote, the theme remains underexplored in Brazil, especially through the lens of diversity. Yet the country’s elderly population is growing at a swift pace. From 2010 to 2022, the share of Brazilians aged 65 and over rose from 7.4% to nearly 10.9% — an increase of almost 60%. That demographic shift places Brazil squarely within the focus of the United Nations’ “Decade of Healthy Aging in the Americas”…
