United Nations’ climate change conferences, particularly in recent years, have become known for their drawn-out and painstaking negotiations, often exceeding the original event deadlines. COP30 in Belém, however, is looking to buck that trend, and Brazil’s presidency is hoping to crack the conference wide open by forcing an unprecedented political deal today, days ahead of schedule.
With three full days of work remaining, this evening could see the finalization of the first part of what Brazil is calling the “Belém Package” — or the set of proposed decisions planned for the conference’s conclusion.
