Judiciary ‘supersalaries’ grew nearly 50% last year

Public spending on so-called “supersalaries” in the Brazilian judicial branch grew 49.3% in 2024 compared to the year before, amounting to an eye-watering total of BRL 10.5 billion (USD 1.9 billion), according to a new study.

According to Brazil’s 1988 Constitution, public servants should earn no more than the monthly salary of a Supreme Court justice — currently BRL 46,366. “Supersalaries,” however, consist of tacking bonuses, perks and additional allowances on top of public servants’ take-home pay and pushing them over the established legal limit. Many of these add-ons are traditionally temporary or one-off, but end up becoming permanent.
