On Brazil’s Independence Day this Sunday, rival political camps sought to demonstrate their strength in the streets — and both claimed victory. In Brasília, the official parade, heavy with appeals to national sovereignty amid the trade war with the United States, drew an estimated 80,000 people.
Yet it was Jair Bolsonaro’s supporters who dominated the day, turning out in larger numbers at unofficial rallies across the country.
In São Paulo, roughly 42,200 people filled Paulista Avenue for a rally demanding amnesty for Jair Bolsonaro’s allies and denouncing the Supreme Court. In Rio de Janeiro, another 42,700 gathered. For the far right, the turnout was larger than in August but weaker than in April.
