Trump’s tariff threats toss Brazil’s agribusiness into uncertainty

Brazil’s powerful agribusiness sector is braced for a shock. On August 1, US President Donald Trump is expected to impose additional 50% tariffs on all Brazilian imports, a move that threatens to upend billions of dollars in trade between the two nations.

According to official Brazilian data, the country exported USD 6.6 billion in agricultural goods to the United States in the first half of 2025, making the US Brazil’s third-largest market after China and the European Union.

While Brazil runs a persistent trade deficit with the US overall, it posted a USD 8.8 billion agricultural surplus against American farmers last year. That edge largely stems from sectors such as pulp and timber, coffee, orange juice and beef — all now directly in the crosshairs of Trump’s planned tariffs…
