How Brazilian farmers can gain from the US-China trade war

The latest round of US tariffs on Chinese imports, and Beijing’s swift retaliation targeting American agricultural goods, has set the stage for a familiar scenario — one that could once again benefit Brazilian farmers.

During Donald Trump’s first term as US president, his tariffs on Chinese goods prompted Beijing to shift its agricultural purchases to Brazil and other Latin American nations, bolstering trade relationships that have remained strong since. 

Now, with another tariff escalation underway, Brazilian agribusiness leaders and the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva see new opportunities to expand their share of the Chinese market. Even US farmers worry that Brazil could emerge from the dispute as the sole winner.

Yet, capitalizing on this moment may not be as simple as stepping into the void left by American producers. New challenges — including heightened competition and uncertainty over trade policy under the current US administration — could complicate Brazil’s ability to fully leverage the situation.
