Could Trump’s Brazil declaration backfire for the right?

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, US President Donald Trump yesterday lashed out at Brazil’s treatment of Jair Bolsonaro, framing the legal troubles of the former far-right leader as a “witch hunt.” Calling Bolsonaro “a strong Leader, who truly loved his Country,” Trump warned that “the Great People of Brazil will not stand for what they are doing to their former President,” adding he would watch the “WITCH HUNT… very closely.”
Some saw the post as prelude to a crisis set to blow up if (or when) Bolsonaro is tried and convicted for trying to stage a coup d’état in 2022. But Trump’s words may have had another target: Tarcísio de Freitas, the São Paulo governor who has grown in popularity among investors as the new standard bearer for the right.
Bolsonarista operators saw this as a boost to Eduardo Bolsonaro, the former president’s third-eldest son and the Brazilian far-right’s ambassador to pro-Trump circles in Washington…
