Lula blasts global failures in UN speech, gets olive branch from Trump

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva went before the United Nations General Assembly with urgency yesterday. In an sharp opening speech that drew repeated bursts of applause, he pressed firmly on global governance failures in regard to climate change, social justice and the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. 

But the most unexpected development came away from the podium, when Lula crossed paths with Donald Trump in the UN’s corridors, shortly after delivering the general debate’s opening speech. Speaking second, the US president described their brief encounter, taking a surprisingly soft tone shortly after scathing Brazil for its policies on online content moderation
