Supporters of Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s far-right former president, have found a new target for their online harassment campaigns: House Speaker Hugo Motta. 

What’s happening. Their pressure campaign aims to force Motta to fast-track a controversial bill that would grant amnesty to those accused of crimes against democratic institutions following the October 2022 election. 

  • Chief among the beneficiaries would be participants in the Jan. 8, 2023, insurrection in Brasília — many of whom have received sentences harsher than some convicted murderers — as well as Bolsonaro himself and his allies, who are to face trial over an alleged coup attempt.
