Brazil and China have taken the first formal step toward building a long-mooted railway that could one day link the heart of South America’s farm belt to the Pacific Ocean — and, by extension, to Asia’s vast consumer markets. 

The two countries signed on Monday a five-year cooperation agreement to study the viability of a train line connecting Lucas do Rio Verde, in Brazil’s Mato Grosso state, to the Peruvian megaport of Chancay, a newly minted logistics hub operated by China’s Cosco Shipping…
