The Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva administration is preparing to regulate the so-called “Retaliation Bill,” a piece of legislation passed in April designed to impose countermeasures on trade partners that levy punitive barriers against Brazilian exports.

The bill was initially aimed at the European Union, whose environmental regulations pose a significant threat to Brazil’s agricultural exports, but now fits like a glove as Donald Trump promised to slap additional 50% tariffs on all Brazilian exports. President Lula said Brazil’s response will be governed by this legislation.

“Before applying retaliatory measures against the United States, Brazil will work to reverse these tariffs through dialogue and by taking the case to the World Trade Organization,” said Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who also serves as the government’s trade and industry minister…
